Fleming ne s’y attendait pas du tout. Bien-sûr qu’il avait reçu le soutien nécessaire, mais tout autant de messages de haine. Et pourtant, le jeune homme a gagné. Quel émoi ensuite de partager sur les réseaux cette image endossant la couronne avec une petite mention inspirée de son idole Miss Gaga : “Je peux être la Reine qui est en moi !”
L’étudiant ne s’identifie pas en tant que transgenre mais soutient la cause. Il a d’ailleurs immédiatement adressé un message en déclarant qu’il était inadmissible d’avoir à se contraindre à des normes établies par d’autres pour pouvoir se faire accepter : “Je n’ose imaginer à quel point c’est difficile d’avoir à jouer un rôle et devoir cacher la meilleure partie de qui nous sommes pour convenir à tous. Les personnes transgenres y sont confrontées en permanence.”
Et si l’initiative le démangeait, c’est surtout pour prouver que peu importe “le genre”, on pouvait changer les donnes : “Si j’ai pu accéder au titre, alors que je suis un homme, un peu étrange pour certains, d’autres le peuvent également. Et je souhaitais montrer à toute mon école, et pourquoi pas au monde entier, que dans la vie tout est possible lorsqu’on le veut vraiment. A tous les jeunes LGBT, l’essentiel c’est d’être heureux et rendre les autres heureux. Ne vous laissez pas abattre. Nous sommes jeunes, nous sommes l’avenir et nous sommes le changement.”

Fleming, who does not identify as transgender, says he ran for the prom queen title to “show the world” that anything is possible.
“I was shocked to see how awesome and supportive my peers are,” Fleming told Queerty. “I received a decent amount of negative backlash, so I was surprised when I won.”

My main reason for wanting to win prom queen is to show the school, and hopefully the world, that if a spunky, odd gay kid can win prom queen, then anyone can! This message is mainly for transgendered people, because they seem to face so much backlash for simply being themselves. If I can win a title that is out of my gender, anyone else should be able to, including transgendered people.
I also want other LGBT youth that our main purpose in life is to make ourselves happy. Very often we conform to societal norms in order to be accepted, and it is not acceptable for us to shun a perfectly fine part of ourselves. We are the innovators of the future, we are the future and we can make a change.
