Après l’action symbolique des deux Femen françaises sur l’esplanade de la tour Hassan à Rabat, c’est le guitariste du groupe britannique Placebo qui a relancé la polémique, en dénonçant la législation homophobe marocaine sur la scène de l’OLM Souissi, à l’occasion de la 14ème édition du Festival Mawazine.
Difficile effectivement pour un artiste ouvertement gay de ne pas réagir, lorsqu’on est invité à se produire dans un pays qui vient justement de condamner des « êtres humains » à trois ans de prison ferme pour « homosexualité ».

Stefan Olsdal est donc apparu dès le début du concert alternant ses guitares dont l’une aux couleurs de l’arc-en-ciel, avant de lever son t-shirt pour afficher le chiffre « 489 » barré sur la poitrine, en référence à cet infâme article du Code Pénal, qui définit les relations entre personnes du même sexe comme des « actes licencieux » et « conte-nature ».
Des revendications également retransmises sur la chaîne de télévision marocaine Médi1 TV qui vont susciter tout un tollé sur les réseaux. Mais qu’importe.
Véritable performance pour le groupe phare des années 90 et acte militant assumé, sur ses comptes sociaux, Stefan Olsdal réaffirme ses engagements et appelle à la suppression de l’article : « Nous devons nous débarrasser de cette législation. J’adresse ainsi tout mon amour et mon soutien sincère à toutes celles et ceux qui doivent encore se battre pour leur droit à aimer. Amour et paix pour tous, de la part de Placebo. ».

Avec un panorama des plus grandes voix du monde, Mawazine-Rythmes du Monde est un festival de musique organisé aux mois de mai et juin qui réunit des centaines de milliers de festivaliers dans les villes de Rabat et Salé depuis 2001. Une scène donc tout à fait idéale pour l’occasion, qui faisait déjà sensation l’année dernière, lorsque pendant la prestation de Ricky Martin, le public avait brandi un drapeau LGBT. Un clin d’oeil devant 200.000 personnes, salué par l’artiste sur les réseaux et qui ne sera pas passé inaperçu dans le pays.

British rock group Placebo used their appearance at a Moroccan music festival to protest the kingdom’s gay rights record in a performance that saw a band member play a rainbow-coloured guitar.
Seen by tens of thousands of fans at the Mawazine music festival, which runs in Rabat until Saturday, the gesture follows a topless protest by controversial feminist group Femen that saw two French women expelled from the kingdom.
During Placebo’s Tuesday night set, bassist Stefan Olsdal took to the stage playing the brightly-coloured instrument with “489” written on his chest — a reference to article 489, which stipulates that homosexuality is punishable in Morocco by up to three years in jail.
The gesture caused a storm on social media, with the guitarist writing on his Instagram account that “article 489 condemns homosexuality in Morocco. Still!! Let’s get rid of it!”
Hours earlier, two Femen members, both French nationals, were expelled from Morocco after protesting topless in front of Rabat’s landmark Hassan Tower.
Morocco’s General Directorate of National Security said the pair had “performed an obscene sequence” and were “topless, sporting a slogan that offended public morality.”
Images shared on social media showed them embracing each other with their tops off in front of the Hassan Tower, a landmark minaret in the Moroccan capital.
“In gay we trust” is written in black on the torso of one of them.
