Le mariage entre conjoints de même sexe est devenu légal en Ecosse depuis ce mercredi à 00H01, qui emboîte ainsi le pas à l’Angleterre et au Pays de Galles où les premières unions ont été célébrés le 29 mars dernier. L’Irlande du Nord, profondément divisée sur le sujet, est désormais la seule des quatre régions du Royaume-Uni à ne pas l’autoriser.
Juste après les douze coups de minuit, vêtus de kilts, Joe Schofield et Malcolm Brown, tous deux âgés de 42 ans, ont rejoint la salle de cérémonie au son de la cornemuse et ont entamé les formalités de leur mariage dès que l’horloge a sonné minuit. Selon la tradition écossaise, le couple a ensuite partagé un whisky dans un quaich, une tasse traditionnelle à deux anses souvent appelée “tasse d’amour”. “Nous allons poursuivre nos vies normalement mais je peux désormais dire avec plaisir ‘c’est mon mari’. C’est super”, a déclaré Malcolm Brown sur la BBC.
Autre heureux couple à convoler en justes noces, Susan Douglas-Scott, 54 ans, et Gerrie Douglas-Scott, 59 ans se sont dit oui avec Nicola Sturgeon, Premier ministre écossais, comme témoin. “C’est un jour mémorable pour l’égalité en Ecosse, le jour où les couples du même sexe ont le droit de se marier avec la personne qu’ils aiment”, s’est félicité Nicola Sturgeon. “Cela va envoyer un message puissant aux gens sur ce qu’est notre pays”, a-t-elle ajouté. Le “mariage homosexuel” est légal dans 14 autres pays, et en partie seulement dans certains comme les Etats-Unis, où 16 Etats l’autorisent.

Scotland’s first same-sex weddings took place in the early hours of New Years Eve on Wednesday.
Joe Schofield and Malcolm Brown, both 42, and Susan Douglas-Scott, 54, and Gerrie Douglas-Scott, 59, were the first of 17 couples to marry on Hogmanay.
MSPs passed the Marriage and Civil Partnership (Scotland) Bill in February, making Scotland the 17th country in the world to legalise gay marriage.
More than 250 couples have converted their civil partnerships to marriage since the law came into effect on December 16.
The new law on gay marriage came into effect in Scotland earlier this month and these first weddings were held at 00:01 on Hogmanay.
The couples were joined by guests including the first minister.
Nicola Sturgeon and Scottish Green Party co-convener Patrick Harvie MSP acted as witnesses at the marriage of Susan and Gerrie, while Scotland’s national poet Liz Lochhead and Scottish government minister Marco Biagi MSP attended the ceremony for Mr Schofield and Mr Brown.
‘Quite a year’
Susan, 54, and Gerrie Douglas-Scott, who is 59, live in Glasgow where they first met 18 years ago and have five grown up children.
They had a civil partnership in March 2006 and decided to convert it through a full marriage ceremony.
The couples were joined by guests and politicians.
Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon and Scottish Green Party co-convener Patrick Harvie were witnesses at the marriage of Susan and Gerrie. Scottish poet Liz Lochhead and Scottish government minister Marco Biagi MSP attended the ceremony for Schofield and Brown.
