Les parlementaires de Hawaï ont légalisé, le 12 novembre, le mariage homosexuel qui a pris effet ce lundi à minuit. Et depuis, les cérémonies nuptiales se succèdent sans relâche.
Hawaï, traditionnelle destination pour les mariages et lunes de miel, est un pionnier dans la lutte pour la reconnaissance du mariage gay aux Etats-Unis.
Il y a vingt ans, une décision de la Cour suprême locale avait fait date en jugeant discriminatoire l’interdiction du mariage à deux personnes du même sexe, initiant un mouvement d’ampleur nationale qui a abouti à la première légalisation du mariage gay dans un Etat américain, le Massachusetts, en 2003.
Ce jugement avait dans le même temps provoqué un contrecoup à Hawaï et incité les législateurs locaux à réserver, en 1994, le mariage aux couples hétérosexuels, une loi désormais caduque.

A Waikiki resort was hosting mass ceremonies for anyone wanting to sign up, while a group of clergy who pushed for the new law planned to host a wedding for an openly gay Unitarian minister at a church near downtown Honolulu.
“It’s just exciting and historic and we wanted to be a part of it,” said Maria Gallo, a Honolulu resident who planned to marry her partner, Beth Creary, at the Sheraton Waikiki at a midnight event.
“This is like a confirmation with a group of people here who are sharing our joy,” she said.
