Il y a quelques jours, Tom Daley faisait son coming-out en vidéo. Le jeune homme s’est dévoilé et peut désormais vivre au grand jour sa relation avec Dustin Lance Black.
C’est sur le plateau du Jonathan Ross Show que le sportif s’est confié sur sa rencontre avec son boyfriend pendant les Kids Choice Awards en mars dernier : “Ça a été le coup de foudre, je n’avais jamais ressenti ça. C’est moi qui ai fait le premier pas.”
“A la fin de la soirée, nous n’avions même pas parlé et j’ai fait ce que je ne fais pas normalement, je lui ai donné mon numéro de téléphone avec la mention ‘appele-moi” accompagnée d’un smiley et puis quand j’ai eu une réponse le lendemain matin, je me suis dit : ‘Je ne peux pas croire que j’ai fait ça’ et puis je me suis dit ‘oh mon dieu'”.
“Pour être honnête, tout cela est assez nouveau et je ne vois pas l’intérêt de mettre une étiquette là-dessus – gay, bi ou hétéro”, ajoute Tom”Daley dans son interview.
“C’était comme si c’était mon petit secret, comme si j’avais des chaînes autour de moi et que je ne pouvais rien dire et je ne pouvais pas être qui je voulais être. Je me sentais tellement seul et pris au piège dans qui j’étais”, confie-t-il encore.
Le champion de plongeon raconte aussi qu’il a rapidement fait part à sa famille de sa relation avec Black.
“Ils me soutiennent tous à fond… mais d’avoir tout le soutien du public est un plus et, honnêtement, ça me réjouit en y pensant”.
“Ma famille sera toujours à mes côtés pour me protéger, mais ils ont été inquiets de la réaction du public et ont craint que puisse en être blessé. Maintenant que tout cela est fait, ils ne peuvent pas être plus heureux”.
Tom Daley révèle qu’il a reçu des messages de centaines d’adolescents qui ont pris la décision de faire eux-mêmes leur coming-out après sa vidéo sur YouTube.
“La réaction a été 100 fois meilleure à ce que j’imaginais qu’elle serait. Je sais que certaines personnes peuvent être un peu négatives à ce sujet mais dans l’ensemble cela a juste été incroyable. Le fait que les gens soient si favorables, cela a été incroyable”.
L’interview sera diffusée sur la chaîne ITV samedi prochain à 22h45.
Oscarisé pour son film sur Harvey Milk, le premier politicien ouvertement gay aux Etats-Unis, Dustin Lance Black est aussi l’auteur de “8 “, une pièce de théâtre sur la bataille judiciaire autour le Proposition 8 en Californie visant à établir si le mariage homosexuel était un droit constitutionnel.

The British Olympic diving star Tom Daley has said that it was “love at first sight” when he met his boyfriend, Oscar winning screenwriter Dustin Lance Black.
Black won an Oscar for his film about Harvey Lee Milk, the first openly gay politician in the United States and was the author of ’8′, the play about the Proposition 8 trial in California over whether same-sex marriage was a constitutional right.
Daley told Jonathan Ross in an interview to be broadcast on ITV: “It was love at first sight. I’ve never felt anything like it – and I made the first move.” The pair met at the Kids’ Choice Awards in LA in March of this year.
“At the end of the night, we hadn’t even talked, and I don’t normally do this, but I wrote in his notes with my number and put ‘call me’ with a wink face and then I had a text in the morning and I was like ‘I can’t believe I just did that’ and then I was like ‘oh my god’.”
He added: “To be honest, everything is all pretty new and I don’t see any point in putting a label on it – gay, bi or straight.”
Daley told Ross : “It felt like it was my dirty little secret, like I had chains round me and I couldn’t say anything and I couldn’t be who I wanted to be. I felt so alone and trapped in who I was.”
The bronze winning diver explained that he told his family about the relationship with Mr Black, a gay rights icon in the United States in May. “They are all so supportive of me… but to have all the support from the public as well has just been a bonus and, honestly, it makes me smile just thinking about it.”
“My family will always want to look out for me and not want me to get hurt but they were worried what the reaction would be like in case people would be horrible to me in the streets. Now that it’s all happened they couldn’t be happier, the support of the public has been an added bonus, it makes me smile to think about it – my life at the moment is perfect.”
Daley said that he has received messages from hundreds of teenagers who took the decision to come out after his YouTube video was posted. “The reaction has been 100 times better than I thought it would be. I know some people can be a bit negative about it but overall it has just been amazing. I was absolutely terrified about doing this as it was so unknown but for people to be so supportive about it, it has been amazing.”
