>> Apple CEO Tim Cook Among 8 Finalists For Time Magazine’s ‘Person Of The Year’

STOP HOMOPHOBIE

>> Earlier today Time Magazine today posted its shortlist for the people that are under consideration for the magazine’s annual “Person of the Year” award.

Apple CEO Tim Cook has once again made the nomination list. Time Magazine is recognizing Cook for two reasons, the launch of the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus and his decision to tell the world that he is gay, reports Al.com.

In all, eight finalists are in the running for the award. Nancy Gibbs, Time Magazine‘s editor announced the eight finalists this morning on the Today Show.

The “Person of the Year Award” award has been given every year since 1927 to “those who have, for good or for ill, most influenced the news and our lives in the past year.” In the past it has been awarded to humanitarians, politicians, scientists, and entrepreneurs.

Time has added a readers’ choice category to the award, which is given to the newsmaker with the most votes in Time’s poll along with the person of the year the editors choose. This year’s readers’ choice nominees included Rick Perry, Kanye West, and influential entrepreneurs. On Monday, it was announced that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi took home the prize.

“Everyone wondered whether he could live up to Steve Jobs’ legacy at Apple of reinventing whole categories regularly. With the Apple Watch, we think he stands a good chance of doing that,” Gibbs said.

In October, Cook announced that he was gay in a letter he wrote for Bloomberg Businessweek. In the letter, Cook said that his decision to come out as gay was done to, “bring comfort to anyone who feels alone and to inspire people to insist on their equality.”

Cook’s competition for the “Person of the Year” award includes, Ferguson protesters, Ebola caregivers, Russian president Vladimir Putin, Taylor Swift, Alibaba CEO Jack Ma, National Football Commissioner Roger Goodall, and acting president of the Iraqi Kurdish Region Masoud Barzani, reports Apple Insider.

Cook is responsible for the introduction of Apple’s iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, Apple Watch, and Apple Pay this year. His decision to come out has made him the first openly gay Fortune 500 CEO.

Cook was nominated in 2012 along with Yahoo CEO Marissa Meyer, Bill and Hillary Clinton. The award went to President Barack Obama. In 2013, the award went to Pope Francis.

Tim Cook had a tough act to follow when Apple CEO Steve Jobs passed away. He has filled those shoes well, we’ll see if the editorial staff of Time, who chooses the winner, agrees.
