Le ton ne cesse de monter entre le cardinal Nicolás de Jesús López Rodríguez, archevêque de Saint-Domingue (République dominicaine), et l’ambassadeur des États-Unis dans le pays, James Brewster.
Selon la presse locale, les propos du diplomate sur la corruption au sein de la société dominicaine, y compris dans les plus hautes sphères, ont suscité la colère du cardinal, qui aurait alors prononcé « une remarque homophobe et machiste » à son encontre, en présence de journalistes réunis à la Chambre de commerce des États-Unis de Saint-Domingue, rapporte le site la-croix.com.
« Cet homme devrait retourner dans son ambassade et s’occuper des taches ménagères, comme la bonne épouse qu’il est, d’un monsieur », aurait ainsi lancé l’archevêque.
En poste depuis 2013, la nomination de ce diplomate ouvertement homosexuel et marié avait suscité l’opposition de l’Église locale. Depuis, les relations sont tendues.
Ainsi, aux yeux du cardinal López Rodríguez, James Brewster a été placé à ce poste pour placer à l’agenda politique du pays les revendications LGBT. « C’est pour cela qu’ils l’ont envoyé », a-t-il assuré à la presse. Une vision partagée par une grande partie des catholiques locaux.
Depuis son arrivée, le diplomate et son conjoint ont rencontré plusieurs activistes LGBT, ont installé le drapeau arc-en-ciel sur la façade de l’ambassade et ont reçu dans leur résidence une réception organisée par l’envoyé spécial des États-Unis pour les droits des personnes LGBT.

Cardinal Nicolas de Jesus Lopez Rodriguez, archbishop of Santo Domingo, the nation’s capital and largest city, made the comment to reporters Tuesday night, the Associated Press reports. It came in response to Ambassador James “Wally” Brewster’s recent statements accusing Dominican officials of widespread corruption. Brewster also said police threatened and attacked U.S. financiers who were attending a conference in the Caribbean country.
“That man needs to go back to his embassy,” Lopez said of Brewster, according to the AP. “Let him focus on housework, since he’s the wife to a man.” The cardinal also said Brewster was promoting a so-called gay agenda.
This is not the first time Lopez has made homophobic statements about Brewster, who became ambassador to the Dominican Republic two years ago. When President Obama announced Brewster’s nomination, Lopez objected and referred to Brewster as a “maricón,” the equivalent of “faggot.” Other Catholic officials said that appointing him ambassador showed a lack of respect for the values of the predominantly Catholic nation. Despite protests by antigay groups, the U.S. Senate confirmed Brewster’s nomination unanimously.
Brewster, a former business consultant and fundraiser for the Democratic Party, is spouse to Bob Satawake. He is the seventh openly gay person to be appointed a U.S. ambassador. He did not immediately respond to the AP’s request for comment.
