A gang of Muslim vigilantes in Accra, Ghana are seeking to hunt down an alleged gay man after they lynched a man they believed to be his lover
La police ghanéenne est actuellement à la recherche d’une bande de jeunes musulmans radicaux, autoproclamés «les gardiens d’Accra», et accusés du meurtre d’un jeune homme de leur communauté, qu’ils soupçonnaient d’homosexualité.
Après l’avoir encerclé, une foule d’une trentaine d’individus l’ont tabassé sans relâche, avant de se lancer à la poursuite de son compagnon, qui alerté par ses proches, à réussi à s’échapper. Il est malheureusement toujours en fuite et les assassins sont toujours à sa recherche.
La police continue bien évidemment ses investigation, mais avoue n’avoir que très peu d’espoir de procéder à des arrestations, compte tenu de la difficulté notamment de pouvoir identifier les suspects, lorsque les incidents de violence se produisent “en foule”. L’inspecteur Kwadwo Osei, chargé de l’enquête, a d’ailleurs déclaré que la plupart des témoins refusaient de parler, considérant la collaboration avec ses services comme de la délation plutôt qu’un soutien pour élucider l’affaire, et punir les coupables.
Rappelons également que les relations homosexuelles sont de toute façon considérées comme une infraction au Ghana, passibles de peines de prison. Et que le gouvernement, et les groupes religieux contribuent largement à alimenter l’homophobie.
Le 24 mars dernier, motivé par la récente décision de la Banque mondiale, du Danemark, des Pays Bas et du Norvège de geler leurs aides au développement à l’Ouganda après que ce pays ait mis en vigueur la loi anti-homosexuelle, l’ex deuxième vice-président du parlement ghanéen, Mike Ocquaye, avait appelé les leaders de la Communauté des Etats de l’Afrique de l’Ouest (CEDEAO) et ceux de l’Union Africaine (UA) à adopter une stratégie de boycott économique afin de “résister à l’Occident” qui tente “d’imposer l’homosexualité” sur le continent.

The man believed to be the lover of the lynched man barely escaped a similar fate but was tipped off by relatives that the mob of around 30 youths was coming for him.
The man who is on the run had been living in the Muslim dominated Accra suburb of Nima for some time and was widely believed by locals to be a homosexual.
Local clerics had advised him to repent but the trouble really started when another gay man moved to the area and locals suspected them of being in a relationship with each other.
Two youths confronted the men over what they said was them flaunting their relationship and the lynched man struck them, resulting in a scuffle.
The two youths then gathered a mob of around 30 people and broke into the home of the man who had struck them.
Police are investigating but are not hopeful they will make arrests.
Crime Officer for Nima Divisional Police Inspector Kwadwo Osei told Daily Guide that it was difficult to identify suspects in incidents of mob violence.
‘These people would not open up to you when you try to establish who killed the young man and are pursuing his partner,’ Osei said.
‘They don’t see it as helping in investigations; they see it as snitching. And that community frowns upon snitching.’
There have been conversations in Ghana about decriminalizing homosexuality but the issue has been deferred to the country’s Supreme Court.
Sex between people of the same-sex is a relatively minor offense in Ghana compared to other parts of Africa and only punished with a maximum of three years in prison.
