L’opinion publique ghanéenne, toute tendance religieuse confondue, est très hostile à l’idée que l’homosexualité, infraction passible de peines de prison, soit légalisée dans le pays. Les personnes LGBT sont ainsi persécutées, lynchées… Pour mémoire, en mai 2014, c’était une bande d’extrémistes religieux, autoproclamés « les gardiens d’Accra », qui faisait la « Une » des journaux locaux pour avoir tabassé à mort un jeune homme de leur communauté qu’ils soupçonnaient là encore d’être gay.
Un espoir semble toutefois se profiler avec les prochaines élections présidentielles, qui devraient se dérouler à partir de novembre prochain.
Candidat en lice pour la quatrième fois au nom du People’s National Convention (PNC), le Dr Edward Mahama a annoncé lors d’un débat organisé ce mardi par l’Institut de Affaires Economiques (IEA) que, même s’il porte le même nom que le président actuel, d’ailleurs également accusé de corruption, il ne compte certainement pas poursuivre sa ligne politique et perpétrer de discrimination à l’encontre des homosexuels s’il était élu président.
Il ne cautionne pas la pratique, en raison de sa foi chrétienne, mais selon la recommandation du Christ qui prône l’amour du prochain, il les aime et estime qu’ils sont libres : « c’est leur droit de faire ce qu’ils veulent avec leur corps ! »
« L’homosexualité est “condamnée par la Bible”, mais je pense aussi en tant que chrétien que nous devrions aimer notre prochain comme nous-mêmes. J’ai un ami très proche dont le fils est homosexuel et je l’ai toujours chéri comme mon propre enfant même si je n’adhère pas à son mode de vie. Lorsque l’on commet un péché, c’est d’abord contre nous. C’est un risque qu’ils assument, je ne saurais tout au plus que les alerter. »
Aucune précision toutefois sur une éventuelle dépénalisation de l’homosexualité.

Dr. Edward Mahama, who took his turn on Tuesday at the Institute of Economic Affairs’ (IEA) Evening Encounter, made the comment in response to a question on what he makes of Ghana’s back and forth argument on homosexuality.
Apostle Samuel Yaw Antwi, General Secretary for the Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council, specifically asked Dr. Mahama about his take on the rights of homosexuals in the country.
« As a Christian I think homosexuality is condemned by the Bible, but I think also as a Christian, Christ said we should love our neighbour as we love ourselves so I love them. I may disagree with them and their lifestyle. I have a very close friend whose son was a homosexual and I always looked at him and loved him inside me but the fact that he was doing the wrong thing for himself. As you know being a pastor, Paul says that when we commit sexual sin is against our own body first. There are scientific basis which others may disagree with. So basically it is not a very healthy sexual practice. And I tell lesbians and gays who come to me that it is not a very healthy sexual practice. If you enjoy it, do it, but you are taking the risk. »
« What I am saying is that, it’s their right to do what they like with their body but I don’t endorse it and I think it’s wrong which is why I educate them. And that’s all I can do because I am not going to think for somebody. »
Dr. Mahama, who spoke on several issues ranging from education, health, economy unemployment and corruption among others, said the PNDC remains the best alternative to turn around the fortunes of the country.
