« Je sens que j’ai été discriminé dans la mode parce que je n’étais pas gay ». C’est ce qu’affirme la star, « visionnaire », dans une interview ce mardi 6 octobre diffusée sur « Show Studio ». Passionné par les vêtements, Kanye West a en effet lancé sa première collection de prêt-à-porter en 2011. Elle n’aura pourtant pas rencontré le succès espéré, si ce n’est des torrents de critiques.
« Surprenant comme tout est différent selon votre forme d’expression culturelle et artistique… Dans le milieu de la musique, on vous pointe du doigt si vous êtes gay et dans la mode, on vous boude parce que vous êtes hétéro », a t-il expliqué, alors qu’il était interpellé par un auditeur sur la stigmatisation des homosexuels dans l’univers du rap et l’évolution des mentalités.
« Il faut avoir un sacré talent pour faire tomber toutes les barrières. D’ailleurs, lorsque Frank Ocean a dévoilé son homosexualité, tout le métier racontait que ce serait mauvais pour sa carrière. C’est aussi l’un des meilleurs auteurs/compositeurs de tous les temps. Ça fait sans doute “cliché” de parler de lui en abordant ce sujet, mais il y a des gens qui se fracassent et lui il fracasse. Je pense aussi que ses fans s’en fichent un peu. Ils aiment sa musique, point barre. Et ce sont ces personnes qui “transgressent” les stéréotypes qui font également l’histoire. Je trouvais utile de le souligner ».

L’occasion également pour Kanye West de renouveler son soutien à Caitlyn Jenner, à qui il a rendu hommage pour son courage et sa persévérance : « Quand j’ai appris sa transition, je me suis d’abord imaginé toutes les blagues cyniques qu’on allait lui faire. Mais personnellement, je me moque de ce que les autres en pensent… Je suis très fier de faire partie de cette famille qui regorge de “pionniers” ».

People don’t give a fuck. They love his music so so much. It’s the people that break the stereotypes that make history but I just thought it was interesting to point that out about the fashion world and the music world and just culturally, it’s reverse discrimination”.
West continued the conversation of trailblazers in reference to Caitlyn Jenner. Jenner previously credited West with opening Kim Kardashian’s mind about her transition. While speaking to SHOWstudio, the “Yeezus” star said he doesn’t care what the rest of the world might think.
“You know the first thing I did think of is I thought about black radio hosts maybe possibly making jokes about it because the black culture is generally so homophobic. News cycles are just constantly… They’re just trying to find some news and some interesting things like, ‘This rapper has this transgender person in his family and…’ But then I was like fuck what people say. Fuck what people think. I feel proud to be in a family that has so many people breaking ground for the generations to come. I’m still getting acquainted to what’s politically correct [to say].”
